News & Notes – February 4

  • Financial Peace University: The pastors and elders are gauging interest in another opportunity to participate in this popular financial program. The course meets once a week for about ten weeks. If you are interested, please sign up on the bulletin board.
  • EHV Bibles are still available for purchase in the church office. Let the office know that you are interested. Checks are payable to Good Shepherd, and please write “EHV Bible” on your check so it will be credited to the correct account. The price is $12.80.
  • Mark your calendars for our fifth annual chili cook-off and game night. The fun takes place on Friday, February 16 at 6:00 PM. A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board. More information is in the newsletter.
  • Lent: Ash Wednesday is February 14 this year. Worship with Holy Communion is at 6:30 PM. A soup supper begins at 5:30, and all are welcome. A sign-up sheet is posted on the church bulletin board. The following Wednesdays of Lent will follow this same schedule.

  • There will be no Midweek Bible Class this week. Class will resume the following Wednesday, February 7. My apologies for the cancellation.

All volunteers and supporters are invited to the general meeting at 3:00 PM. We’ll finish with a potluck supper together around 5:00-6:00 PM. The St. John congregation will provide the main dish – chicken & noodles. Please bring a side dish or dessert.

  • Flowers on the altar today are in celebration of LIFE Sunday, given by our members who volunteer for our Pregnancy Care Center in Saginaw. The red rose is the symbol for life and the baby’s breath is to remember that every baby is a gift of Almighty God, the Creator of every life. “In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.” Job 12:10

  • The Annual Meeting of the Saginaw Valley Chapter of Christian Life Resources will be Sunday, Jan 28, at 3:00 PM at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church in Frankenmuth. All volunteers and supporters are invited to the general meeting at 3:00 PM. We will start with a worship service with Rev. Loersch giving the message. The offering will go toward reducing our LACE loan. In lieu of, or in addition to a monetary gift, attendees may bring newborn-0-3 mo. outfits, PJ’s, onesies, or baby wipes which will be taken to each PCC. Bring along anyone else who is interested in learning more about the ministries at the Pregnancy Care Centers. We’ll finish with a potluck supper together around 5:00-6:00 PM. The St. John congregation will provide the main dish – chicken & noodles, please bring a side dish or dessert.

  • Thank You: The pastors and teachers would like to offer their heart-felt thanks for your kind and thoughtful gifts to them during this Christmas season. Your generosity is sincerely appreciated. What a privilege it is to serve with and for you!
  • Voters’ Meeting: January 16 is the date for our regular quarterly Voters’ Meeting. The Voters’ Meetings are where the business of our church is conducted, and it is important that voters make an effort to attend. If, for some reason, it is impossible for you to attend, please contact the church office or council secretary.
  • New Bible Class: A new Bible class begins today. The class will be studying Paul’s letter to the Galatians. Though only a few chapters long, this letter of Paul offers us tremendous comfort as it shows us how we are saved only by God’s grace through faith in Christ Jesus. Of special interest will be examining key differences between the NIV and EHV as we work through this portion of God’s Word.
  • Today’s Christian Women’s Retreat registration has begun. Registration materials are available at church and also online at www.tcwr.org. The retreat will be held April 13 – 15, 2018 at the Marriott Auburn Hills Pontiac Hotel, Pontiac, MI. Rooms are also available at the Courtyard by Marriott and the Residence Inn on the same campus. The theme for this year’s retreat is “But Take Heart, I Have Overcome the World” John 16:33. This year we are offering a special rate for students of $115.00, along with speakers and topics that will appeal to young women. The password for the online registration is the word retreat.

  • Giving Tree for the Pregnancy Care Center: On the bulletin board across from the Pastors’ offices is a special Giving Tree. The tree is decorated with star-shaped ornaments with gift suggestions for helping out the families served by our Pregnancy Care Centers. This is an easy and fun way for your family to get involved with this ministry. Choose whichever ornament you like, purchase the item and place it in the collection box located in the secretary’s office.

  • Children’s Christmas Service is today at 3:00 PM. Following the service there will be a fellowship gathering. Light refreshments will be served.
  • Photography: We kindly ask that the congregation refrain from flash photography during the service this afternoon.
  • A Special Voters’ Meeting is scheduled for this Tuesday, December 19 to pass our 2018 budget and elect officers. All voters are encouraged to attend. If you cannot attend, please excuse to the office or to Council Secretary.

News & Notes – December 10

  • Christmas Poinsettias: Today is the last day to sign up for Christmas poinsettias.
  • Christmas Baskets: Today is the last day we will be collecting a free-will offering in the back of the church. We will be delivering baskets for Christmas to some of our members who could use a little extra help at this time of year.
  • The Women’s Bible Study group will meet at 6:30 tonight  for our annual Christmas gathering. Please bring a yummy treat to share and a gift for our gift exchange. All women of the congregation are welcome to attend. Friends are welcome too.
  • MLS Choir: Please join us for the Michigan Lutheran Seminary Concert Choir singing at our church next Sunday, December 17 at 8:00 and 10:30 AM. We are delighted that they will be presenting their program of music at our congregation.
  • Children’s Christmas Service will be next Sunday December 17 at 3:00 PM. Following the service there will be a fellowship gathering with cookies being served.

The volunteers at the PCC will combine your gifts of love with God’s Word to help meet both the physical and spiritual needs of the families who come to the Centers for help.   • Caroling: Our annual caroling group will gather at church at 6:30 PM on Friday, December 15. Following caroling, all are invited to the Behnken’s for food and fellowship.

  • Christmas Poinsettias: A sign-up sheet to order Christmas poinsettias is on the church bulletin board. Each plant is $7.00. Please sign up by December 10th. Thank you for beautifying our church to celebrate Christ’s birth!
  • Our Midweek Advent Service is this Wednesday, December 6 at 6:30 PM. A soup supper will precede the service at 5:30. All are welcomed and encouraged to attend. A sign-up sheet is posted.
  • SCRIP cards are available for purchase between church services today.
  • Christmas Baskets: We will be delivering baskets for Christmas to some of our members who could use a little help at this time of year. There is a basket for a free-will offering in the back of the church today through next Sunday, December 10th.
  • Christmas for Kids is scheduled for Saturday, December 9 from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. There are volunteer and donation sheets on the bulletin board. Please sign up if you are willing to volunteer your time or donate items. Volunteers are needed to make a successful event.
